High places, routine, the fire escape in summer

He knew his name and came, but only when we were alone. In company he pretended not to know it, or me.
Any tricks or words they knew?
-----
Visitors, the doorbell, suitcases, and any disruption to the deep order he required.
Was there anything they really disliked?
-----
Dawn on the windowsill, breakfast, the bookcase, an evening appearance for dinner, and the nightly ritual of sitting on my chest once the lights were out.
Did you have a little ritual together?
-----
He appeared silently, as Russian Blues do, materialising on the arm of the sofa as though he had always been there.
How did they greet you when you came home?
-----
On the highest shelf of the bookcase in winter, and in a flowerpot on the fire escape in summer, watching Brooklyn go by.
Where did they love to sleep or curl up?
-----
He hid from everyone except me. Guests spent years hearing about a cat they were not fully convinced existed.
What were their funny habits or quirks?
-----
He hid under my bed for two weeks after the shelter, and I left food at the edge and did not push. On the fifteenth night he climbed onto the bed, sat on my chest, and from then on he was mine entirely.
How they came into your life?
