Basil leaves
Tunnels, thumping

He came to the rustle of the basil bag and knew his name, and he had trained me to understand roughly nine distinct thumps.
Any tricks or words they knew?
-----
Being picked up, which he permitted for four seconds before registering a formal complaint, and then a loud one.
Was there anything they really disliked?
-----
Breakfast greens, a vigorous dig, a long flat-out nap, an evening of free-roaming the flat, and a dedicated session of rearranging his hay to his exact standards.
Did you have a little ritual together?
-----
He ran to the front of the pen and thumped once, which meant either hello or an immediate demand for basil, usually both.
How did they greet you when you came home?
-----
Stretched out flat in a cardboard box filled with hay, so relaxed that I checked on him hourly for the first month.
Where did they love to sleep or curl up?
-----
He was two pounds of pure authority. He thumped his back foot to issue commands and was visibly outraged when they were not obeyed.
What were their funny habits or quirks?
-----
He was the smallest of a litter at a city farm, overlooked because the children wanted the big friendly ones. He was neither big nor friendly, and I loved him immediately.
